About the Challenge
Welcome back - thanks to you, the Sustainable Living Challenge is now in its twelfth successful year! The SLC, run through UNSW Built Environment, encourages young people to raise their awareness, engage their minds and develop their skills to be better able to respond to the challenge of sustainability in their future personal and professional lives.
What is the Sustainable Living Challenge?
The SLC is the peak national education for sustainability program in Australia. It engages young people, their teachers and communities in the innovative learning challenges presented by sustainable living.
The program encourages inquiry across a spectrum of multidisciplinary issues relating to sustainable living. The program is free and is a unique vehicle for students, teachers and schools to profile their sustainability initiatives.
The SLC is a key part of UNSW's commitment to meaningful engagement with the community.
Why should you participate?
The SLC fosters an approach to learning that is grounded in the day-to-day reality of the learner. These learner-centred processes come in many forms and teachers have been pioneering these processes in classrooms all over the country.
These processes are more commonly understood as:
- rich tasks
- inquiry-based learning
- teaching and learning projects
- project-based learning
- experiential learning
- action research and learning.
Teachers are encouraged to explore their own pathways to educate for a sustainable future and take up their own sustainable living challenge!
What is your sustainable living challenge?
The challenge is to explore how we interact with natural systems and develop approaches that are considerate of relationships. It requires understanding the true cause or drivers of environmental problems when developing solutions and actions. These solutions will involve re-designing human systems so that natural systems are not adversely impacted through our interaction.
The SLC recognises that we all have sustainability challenges facing us each day - as an individual, as a group or as a whole school. We encourage you, both teachers and students, to ask the question 'what is my sustainable living challenge?' and then take steps towards researching, designing and taking action to address it.
