The goal of this day is to strengthen international cooperation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as culture, education, health, human rights, the environment, and social and economic development.

The Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of indigenous peoples' cultures and the great diversity that they represent. It is also an occasion to redouble efforts to address issues of exclusion, discrimination and poverty that are still the daily reality for many of these peoples.

Raising awareness will allow for the targeting of indigenous peoples in programmes to reduce poverty since these communities remain stubbornly amongst the poorest of the poor.
