The annual observance of Disarmament Week, which begins on the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, invites States to highlight the danger of the arms race, propagate the need for its cessation and increase public understanding of the urgent tasks of disarmament.

  • Disarmament efforts focus on two basic areas of weapons -- weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, and small arms.
  • Through sustained efforts, the world community has achieved numerous agreements aimed at reducing existing nuclear arsenals, banning their deployment from certain environments (e.g., outer space, ocean floor) and regions, limiting their proliferation and ending testing. Despite these achievements, nuclear weapons and their continuing existence remain a major threat to peace and a major challenge to the international community in this new century.
