The Sustainable Living Challenge in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program and University of New South Wales’ is seeking nominations for the National Teach Sustainability Award.  The aim of this award program is to recognise leading practice sustainability educators in schools and to encourage educators to contribute teach sustainability resource sharing hub to provide a world class resource for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

How it works?


The Teach Sustainability Award will be selected from the innovative teaching programs submitted to the teachsustainability.com.au website.

  • To officially enter, a teacher simply submits their own (self-authored) sustainability education teaching program to the teachsustainability.com.au website by the end of November 2009. (Usually in word or PDF format).
  • Each teaching program will be reviewed by a panel of educators against the award selection criteria below.
  • Every teacher who contributes a self-authored resource will receive a professional recognition certificate, acknowledging their role as innovative teachers contributing to a more sustainable future.
  • The awarded teacher(s) receive prizes including a sustainability book pack from the UNSW Bookshop, membership to the Australian Association of Environmental Education.
  • The Award will be presented annually as part of the Sustainable Living Challenge in early December


Award criteria

The teaching program or unit of work should:

  • focus on sustainability (this could include an in-depth study of a single sustainability issue or consider connections between a range of sustainability issues)
  • provide a real world context for learning
  • demonstrate relevance to students’ lives and experiences
  • involve inquiry-based learning
  • be innovative and creative in its delivery method
  • be easily understood and transferable for other teachers.

The Award is open to primary and secondary teachers within Australia.
