Alien Invasion

Inspired by her bush regeneration work, year 12 student Celine Steinfeld created an interactive CD-rom designed to stop the alien plant invasion at Gordon's Bay. The St Catherine's School (NSW) student was awarded First Prize in 2002.

Calorie Killer

A project by the year 9 science class at Ariah Park Central School (NSW) created an innovative solution to chilly classroom temperatures and the need to exercise. The project was awarded the Sustainable Schools Eco-Initiative Award in 2004.

Lisa Batten and Rebekah Waite, year 11 geography students from Ferny Grove State High School (QLD), created a camapign to raise awareness of the impacts on Cedar Creek. This project was awarded the communication award in 2004.

Education for Sustainable Living

St Leonard's College, Cornish Campus, developed an amazing whole school approach to sustainability. Over a number of years they transformed their curriculum across all Key Learning Areas, using sustainable living concepts to enhance personal skills, civic leadership and critical awareness. The school was awarded the Sustainable Schools Champion in 2004.

Year 9 Lyneham High School (ACT) student Tanya Buettikofer explored the effectiveness of insulation from window furnishings through a series of well designed experiments. She was awarded the Research and Investigation Award in 2004.

Michael Azoury, a year 12 student from Canberra Grammar School, viewed 'waste' as a valuable resource in his creation of a household scale affordable water treatment system. Michael was awarded the overall Sustainable Living Champion in 2004.

Inviting native guests

Brieanna Gallagher, a year 7 student from Bundarra Central School, took on the sustainability challenge to create habitat for native birds by redesigning her family's garden. Brieanna received the Junior Award and was the Overall Runner Up for 2004.

Eudunda Area School has taken to the streets with an ambitious project to provide recycling services for the town through a student lifeskills project. The Kerbside Krew was awarded the Community Outreach Award for 2003.

Nepalese Wind Turbine

Michelle Quach, a year 11 student from MLC Burwood (NSW), considered the cultural and appropriate technology issues in her creation of a wind turbine for buildings in Katmandu. Michelle was awarded overall Sustainable Living Champion in 2003.

Enthusiastic Canterbury Girls High School (NSW) students have taken on the challenge to live more sustainably. The students' efforts redesigning the school gardens and implementing their school wide eco-audits made them the Sustainable Schools Champion for 2005.

Solar Cooker

Inspired by his desire to create a simple solution for a complex problem, Year 12 Canberra Grammar School (ACT) student Rohan Geddes, developed a functional solar cooker for use in disaster relief areas. For his outstanding efforts Rohan was awarded the Design Award and was the overall Sustainable Living Champion for 2005.

Thanks to Vaughan Watson we can rely on the sun for more than just growing our lawns - we can now use it to cut them too! The St George Christian School year 12 student was awarded the Greenhouse Energy Efficiency Award in 2003 for his solar powered lawn mower.

Julia Offner, a year 12 student from Covenant Christian School (NSW), weaved a sustainability solution using plastic bags and wool. Julia received the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2005 for her multi-purpose blanket designed for those needing shelter and warmth.

Willeton Water Cycle

As part of their year 9 science class, four Willeton Senior High School students decided to tackle issues related to poverty and access to clean and safe drinking water. Jason Andrews, Amy Bingham, Sarah Browning and Todd Fadry were awarded the Best Group Award in 2002 for their cycle-powered water purification device.
