Alien Invasion
The Background
Working hard as part of a team of bush regenerators at Gordon's Bay (in eastern Sydney), Celine realised that their efforts needed to be more widely supported by the local community. She decided to design a program to help her fellow students learn about local biodiversity and bush regeneration techniques and to inspire them to get involved. She created "Alien Invasion", an interactive CD-rom where students become intelligence officers that have to investigate, research and then attack the virtual weeds, before its too late!
The Project
Celine decided on an alien attack scenario as an innovative way to capture the imagination of the user, while supporting the content of the CD-rom.
Through the research stage, she liaised with council bush regeneration staff, Bushcare volunteers and target audience members to develop a project storyboard. The project realisation stage involved capturing film, pictures, sounds and animations, and editing them using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere. Next, the content was imported into the Macromedia Director authoring software and elements of interactivity were incorporated. Celine was continuously seeking feedback and evaluating the project to help her gather new perspectives and make improvements.
The Journey
-
Celine designed an innovative education program to inspire her peers to get active in protecting local biodiversity.
-
By developing a clear understanding of the audience's needs, she was able to develop a sustainability program that was relevant, interesting and inspiring.
-
Celine worked collaboratively with people outside her school to deepen her knowledge about local biodiversity. Her ideas evolved through a supportive feedback loop, continuously improving her approach to learning.
Quality sustainability education programs enhance knowledge, attitudes, behaviour about sustainability issues, but most importantly they should also encourage people to action. By thoroughly researching content and the target audience needs, Celine was able to design an innovative and inspiring biodiversity education program.
