Sustainability Education at DEH
The Australian Government Department of Environment and Heritage provides a range of resources that seek to develop skills, knowledge, values and behaviours that support a sustainable environment.
The Department coordinates many projects, including the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSi), the National Environmental Education Council (NEEC) and the Australian Research Institute of Education for Sustainability (ARIES). These initiatives are based in the Sustainability Education section.
Over the years and through many projects, the Department has created a diverse range of publications including books, reports, fact sheets, games, posters and websites. The full publications list is avaliable at www.deh.gov.au/education/publications/index.html.
In 2005, the Department released Education for a Sustainable Future: A National Environmental Education Statement for Australian Schools. This is a nationally agreed description of the nature and purpose of education for sustainability through all years of schooling and includes a vision and framework for implementation. It is a companion to existing national and state policies and programs and intended for teachers, schools and their communities. More information and a copy of the report is available here.
